Homemade Ice Cream

Such a strange post to be writing in the middle of a frigid and snowy Chicago winter.  I’m not sure what inspired me to whip up several batches of homemade ice cream the other day, but I did it and I’m sure happy I did.  I’m not a huge sweets guy but when someone asks for me to bring a dessert to a party, homemade ice cream often comes to mind.  It’s not everyday that people bring homemade ice cream and that’s what makes it special, even if it is just a few simple ingredients and even simpler preparation.  As long you have some sugar, cream, a few mix-ins and an ice cream maker, you’re set.  I use a pretty basic ice cream maker – Cuisnart Stainless Steel – about $90 at most stores or online.  Minor investment for a product that produces superior ice cream time after time.  Even more worth it when the thermometer reads well above zero.

At any rate, I made two basic ice creams.  There are more complicated recipes out there, that involve creme anglaise, but I opted for a more straightforward and uncomplicated approach.  The result is still a super rich and creamy ice cream that far exceeds anything you can buy in the store.  Sunshine or clouds.  Green grass or snow covered grounds.  Frozen sidewalks or fry an egg on the asphalt.  Homemade ice cream is great in any season.
