To me, cooking was never about making fancy food or trying to impress people with how much I knew about cooking. Cooking was and still is, about the joy of making great tasting food and sharing it with the ones I love. No recipe on this site better brings that idea to life than this one.
My current life is filled with the laughter, happiness, stress and chaos that comes with having three children, all under 4 years old. In between raising them, I still need to find time to be a husband and work a full-time job. The hours or, in most cases, minutes that I find myself left with at the end of the day, I dedicate to this site and one of my greatest passions in life. And it is in those small windows of time that come some of my greatest creations. For instance, this recipe. Egg, bread, butter, salt and pepper. That’s it. Boring, right? Except, not.
Most weekends I try to get up before my wife (unless I’ve had too much fun the night before), get the kids up, make breakfast and let her sleep in for a few extra minutes or on the good days, an hour. On rare occasions, after getting the kids fed, they actually go off and play by themselves… and those occasions are glorious, because that is when I find myself in the kitchen with nothing but precious time. And I get anxious. And I want to cook.
So, I start thinking about what can I make for my wife that will be quick, delicious and done before she wakes up or the kids need tending to.
Enter, Egg in a Hole. Lame name I know. But I don’t know what to call it. What I do know is that it’s buttery, toasty, yolky and delicious. Try this recipe the next time you want to share amazing food with someone you love.
Egg in a Hole
- 4 slices of your favorite bread (for the photo shoot, I used plain ole’ Wonder bread)
- 4 tbsp. butter
- 4 eggs
- Kosher salt
- Freshly ground black pepper
- With a shot glass or small biscuit cutter, press a hole into the center of each piece of bread. Do not discard the bread holes.
- Add the butter to a large skillet over medium heat.
- When butter is melted, place the pieces of bread into the skillet. (Work in batches if your skillet can’t hold all four pieces of bread)
- *Note* Add the “bread holes” to the skillet and toast them alongside the bread slices and eggs.
- Let the bread slices toast for about a minute.
- Gently crack an egg into the center of each hole.
- Cook for about 2 minutes.
- Gently flip each piece of bread with a spatula and cook for another 2 – 3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, remove from skillet and serve with the toasted bread holes for dipping.
