As CrossFit’s popularity continues to increase, many questions have risen about the program. Those that have not yet been exposed to a CrossFit workout  may feel completely lost visiting message boards and deciphering WOD’s.  It’s important to understand that CrossFit is based on a complex methodology and despite many claims- it is not for everyone! Are you curious about CrossFit? Here are three common CrossFit questions answered, as well as valuable resources for getting started with CrossFit properly:

What does WOD stand for?

“WOD” stands for Workout of the Day.  CrossFit at its root is “constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movement” which is implemented through routines known as “WODs.” Although many workouts may have similar exercises, no workout is repeated. The only exception to this rule is the baseline workouts used to measure results and repeated as needed. Simply put, a “WOD’ is a unique workout designed for that particular day.

What are some common CrossFit movements?

CrossFit is based on functional movements and there are “nine foundational movements” that CrossFit WOD’s tend to focus on. The “foundational movements” start with the big three of squat, shoulder press, and deadlift. These three each have progressions and variations that make up the rest of the “foundational movements.” Additional CrossFit exercises include pull-ups, chin-ups, push-ups, dips, burpees, and double-unders.

Scroll down the page to review a list of affiliates in your area. Many affiliates, also known as boxes, will offer a free introductory class when you contact them in advance. You can also perform the WODs listed on the site free of charge for your own training.
